FRONTIER COURTSHIP I wish that I could ride across the prairie, with no one there but just my horse and me, until I reached the mountains in the distance, the mountains that from here I cannot see.
And when I got there, I would slowly climb them, until I stood upon the highest peak. With arms outspread, I’d turn to look around me while praying for the happiness I seek.
I’ve wondered what the coming days would be like, and hoped I’d feel a lover’s sweet caress. Ma is calling to me now from the kitchen, “It’s time that you put on your wedding dress.”
I’m surrounded by the room that I grew up in, and know my life will change when day is done. I hear the wagons coming down the driveway, where Pa is out there greeting everyone. At last I finish dressing for my wedding, and the heavy veil sure makes things hard to see, as I open up the doorway to my future, I hope I like the man they’ve picked for me.
